There is hardly a healthy report from the European Union concerning the status of contaminants in agric products exported from African countries . Lack of awareness and economic challenge are some of the risk factors that have opened the window for consumption of unwholesome food and feed . Credit mu8st be given to continental interventions like CAADP, FARA, ASM who have displayed credible passion on the crusade against unsafe food. From Senegal, through Tripoli and Nairobi, to Angola and South Africa, the story of near neglect is similar. Just last year 2020, the EU had to further extend the ban placed on Nigeria concerning her dried beans, this time to 2022. Although workshops and conferences are being held, it is clear that critical gaps and scary holes are still there to be filled.

Safe Food and Feed Foundation appreciates the effort of the organizers of the forthcoming Food safety  Summit  taking place in South Africa from June 8-9,2021 . Being a the second outing by the organizers, the ambition and passion are clear, but expected  beneficial result is the goal, where more and more Africans will now access safe food that will guarantee health and enhance export value.

After the Summit, there must be measured and time bound feed back and follow up. It is only after this is done that it can be separated from other hollow talk-shops !!!!

We call on other African countries to emulate this and make the development a more aggressive continental initiative that must attract the needed  urgency and importance from governments and policy makers

Mesothelioma cancer, the asbestos-driven silent killer

Mesothelioma Cancer – The Mesothelioma Center

Mesothelioma is a malignant tumor caused by inhaled asbestos fibers. It usually affects the lining of the lungs, however mesothelioma tumors can also form on the linings of the abdomen, heart, and testes.

Pleural mesothelioma is the most common form, accounting for 75% of all cases. It affects the lining of the lungs, and symptoms can include shortness of breath, chest pain, dry coughing and more. The second more common type is peritoneal mesothelioma, which forms in the lining of the abdomen. Although less common, other forms of mesothelioma include pericardial (heart), and testicular mesothelioma.

Asbestos exposure is the leading cause of mesothelioma. Asbestos is a group of six naturally occurring minerals composed of soft, flexible fibers. It was previously used in many consumer products due to its heat resistance.

Those at high risk of developing mesothelioma are blue-collar workers, veterans, and family members of those regularly exposed to asbestos fibers. Firefighters, construction workers, power plant workers, shipyard workers, and others are at high risk of occupational asbestos exposure. U.S. Navy veterans also face health risks due to the abundance of products that were used in many of the military products before the 1980’s.

Due to its long latency period, about 20-50 years, most patients are diagnosed in their late 60’s. Men also account for a majority of mesothelioma diagnoses.

Interventions for Mesothelioma can involve   clinical trials,   conventional cancer treatments such as chemotherapy, radiation, surgery as well as alternative therapies.

PESTICIDES in RICE: Achieving harmony in global standards, courtesy FAO

Difficulty in designing food policy at all levels easily invites the need to  there are 2 sections to the publication which focuses on rice. Part A identifies the level of harmonization in main rice producing and trading countries and explores the possible effects on trade, while Part B investigates the reasons behind differing levels of harmonization.


The publication, that just came out  in 2020,  will no doubt enhance food safety and international trade. Unfair trade arising from diverse forms of food fraud will embrace a reduction if the 108 -page publication is  put to use. This is a commendable outing from the FAO  of the UN.

Food odor is rampant anywhere food is being prepared or served. The odor may be a reflection of  a few  condiments added to it or a combined effect of all the ingredients, on being heated. At times, such aroma may put off prospective consumers thus attracting loss of interest.. Happily, some manufacturers have devised interventions that can nullify the odor impact by chemical or biological means. Effectiveness of each product is however, determined by the end user .

Kenya has been mapped as an aflatoxin hotspot, a leading cause of liver cancer, hiding in grains like maize and animal food products.

Findings of a study released last month by the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) showed a large amount of milk and grains consumed by Kenyans have aflatoxin levels exceeding internationally accepted limit.

Aflatoxin is a tasteless poison produced by Aspergillus flavus fungus caused by a mould in soil that commonly affect cereals. It is mostly passed to humans through animal food products or direct ingestion of affected crops.

The study dubbed “Measuring and mitigating risk of mycotoxins in maize and dairy products for poor consumers in Kenya” was done from samples of of livestock feeds collected from farmers in five counties.

Kenya Agricultural and Livestock Research Organisation director general Eliud Kireger however dismissed the report as alarmist, saying that most Kenyans could have died if that was the case

ISM – MYCOKEY Workshop–Training Course  “Rapid Methods for Mycotoxin Detection in the Food Chain” 9-13 October 2017, Bari, Italy

The Institute of Sciences of Food Production – National Research Council of Italy (ISPA-CNR), under the aegis of the MYCOKEY project ( and the International Society for Mycotoxicology (ISM), is hosting a one-week Workshop-Training Course from October 9-13, 2017.

The course will give information about major issues associated with mycotoxin analysis and contamination along the food chain. Lectures and laboratory training will be provided on routinely used and new screening tools for rapid, robust and user-friendly analysis of mycotoxins, including validation aspects.

Practical training in the laboratory will cover most of the course and trainees will be assisted individually in the laboratory by ISPA-CNR staff expert in instrumental and immunochemical analysis of mycotoxins.

The app was developed by Mobile Assay, which specializes in mobile lab innovations. The test, more formally known as an immunoassay test, involves analysing a colour-changing test strip for the presence of a particular substance, in this case Aflatoxin. The test strip is photographed using the smartphone’s camera and the app calculates the pixel density of the coloured strip to determine how much Aflatoxin is present within a certain threshold. Current available lab tests are priced at $15 each plus the cost of transporting samples from rural areas to those equipped with testing facilities. This is out of reach for many in the Global South. Some turn to cheaper tests, which return only a positive or negative result and don’t provide any information about whether or not the level of contamination poses a health threat or is fit for consumption. This test is set to cost about $2-3 and provides such detailed information. What’s more, it is immediately uploaded to an online database tracking Aflatoxin outbreaks.
